For Freedoms Collaboration: Art as Civic Action
Salaam Green’s Role: Truth-Telling in the Deep South
As part of the 2018 For Freedoms 50 State Initiative, Salaam Green served as a featured facilitator and poet in Alabama. She helped lead a series of interactive Truth Booths—temporary installations designed for individuals to speak candidly about their hopes, fears, and visions of freedom. Using her skills as a trained Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) facilitator and founder of the Literary Healing Arts movement, Salaam held space for community members to share their lived experiences around racial and environmental injustice.
“We asked people what freedom meant to them—and we listened. That, in itself, was revolutionary.” — Salaam Green.
For Freedoms is an artist-led organization founded by Hank Willis Thomas and Eric Gottesman. Known for its creative civic engagement campaigns—including the iconic 50 State Initiative—the collective uses art to deepen public discourse and reimagine what civic participation looks like in America. In 2018, For Freedoms launched the largest creative collaboration in U.S. history, partnering with artists, institutions, and activists in all 50 states to spark dialogue around democracy, justice, and freedom.
